THE NEED
Antihistamines [1] and corticosteroids [2] are the key products allergy sufferers use for treatment. Available via prescription or over the counter (OTC), these medications cause serious side effects and are subject to restricted use. There is demand for new developments that prevent allergic reactions rather than treat the symptoms. The market is open to better allergy solutions and waiting for the products that can effectively meet this need.
POLYRIZON SOLUTION – The Product
Polyrizon’s first product for Ragweed allergy prevention will be in the form of a nasal spray composed of protective microspheres-gel that adheres to the nasal mucus and prevents the interaction and accumulation of the specific allergens on the nasal mucosal tissue, hence - preventing the allergic reactions and their ensuing symptoms.
Polyrizon’s easy-to-use formulations are highly effective and long-lasting, with no side effects. With Polyrizon’s protective biogel, allergy sufferers can have a better quality of life without continually purchasing new products to try and control their suffering.
THE MARKET
Polyrizon’s first target market is the Ragweed allergy market. Ragweed is the single most common seasonal allergen, Around 30 million people in the United States alone suffer from Ragweed airborne allergy[3]. Outside the U.S., 25% of the population has airborne allergies (Ragweed, Grass etc.) and the incidence of allergic disease is rising worldwide. [4]
Allergy sufferers spend an estimated $18 billion worldwide on medications — with the number increasing by 10% annually. By 2010, expenditures in the allergy market are projected to reach $10 billion in the U.S. alone. [5]
Trends toward protection and prevention in other markets, including bioterrorism and exposure to workplace toxins, present tremendous opportunity for future Polyrizon developments.
BACKGROUND
Allergic rhinitis, known as hay fever, is caused by pollens of specific seasonal plants, airborne chemicals and dust particles in people who are allergic to these substances. It is characterized by sneezing, runny nose and itching eyes. This seasonal allergic rhinitis is commonly known as 'hay fever', because it is most prevalent during haying season. It is particularly prevalent from late May to the end of June (in the Northern Hemisphere). However, it is possible to suffer from hay fever throughout the year.
